Thailand Adventures: Bangkok

Bangkok is nothing that I imagined before. Most people who come to Thailand from somewhere will probably land in this capital city that is bigger and crazier than most people imagine. It is certainly bigger and crazier than I expected!

When we arrived at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, they gave us these welcome brochures. It's got some useful basic information that might help you in your stay in Thailand.

Bangkok is Thailand’s capital and it’s biggest city. It’s 11 million inhabitants keep it bustling with many diverse activities for visitors to enjoy. Someone who is new to travelling or backpacking will certainly enjoy Bangkok (and Thailand, in general) because the city has so much things to offer to all kinds of traveller. One of the few things that you have to try though is eating Bangkok street food! There are food kiosks everywhere! Don’t be afraid to try whatever you fancy.

Forget this very germaphobic western idea of hygiene. Come on, really, most of the food you are going to eat aren’t dirty. They don’t just take garbage, put some spices to it and sell it to people. Thai people eat the same food too! Actually, in Thailand, there is a strong culture of eating out. The restaurants are almost always filled with people. The food kiosks on the streets are always busy. So be sure to join the locals and try the street pad thai or spicy noodle soup!

Khao San Road is filled with tourists. It is actually kind of sad that many tourists do not know anything about Bangkok except Khao San Rd. If you can, explore other places of Bangkok! There are many distinct areas that offer more than just drinking the local Chang or Leo beer, thai massage, pad thai and elephant designed thai pants.

Bangkok is a very modern city. Some of the buildings and facilities are even more modern than that in Europe and North America. It’s also very interesting the mixture of modern and old in Bangkok. You will see new, modern condo buildings next to older wooden buildings. You will see a fancy mall next to a line of kiosks as part of a big street market.

The Wats (temples) are so elaborate and beautiful! Make sure you visit one. Be respectful of the rules of the temples though.

As for transportation, there are a variety of options to keep you moving in and around the city – buses, taxis, tuktuks, river boats, MRT and BTS Skytrain, etc. You can also rent a motorcycle and bicycle but Bangkok traffic is crazy so be careful!

dddd

Traffic in Bangkok is crazy! It can take hours to move just a few kilometers!

Thailand is also known as the land of smiles. Thai people are generally very friendly. Smile to them and greet them with a “Sawadee ka”, if you are a woman or “Sawadee krab” if you are a man. This is the basic greeting which means “hello”.

Just take time to explore and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city and you will have an experience that you will always remember!
